garlic farming canada

Hey and welcome to the Garlic Ranchers. It's Rosemary here and my husband Christian and I are the founders of Garlic Ranchers. We have a small farm in the BX area of Vernon, BC in the beautiful Okanagan region of Canada. Our two dogs Leo and Kia and our crazy cat Luna live on the farm and grow great garlic that we get to share with you.

Being avid farmers market buyers, supporting local and thriving on whole foods we decided that becoming garlic farmers would be a good fit. We also watched the Netflix show "Rotten" and now know how horrible Chinese garlic is for our health. The problem being that local garlic is only available for such a short period of time. This formed our goal... to create excellent Canadian grown garlic that is shelf stable so healthy options are always available.

We set out to create a solution to what we see as a major issue around a commonly used household staple food in Canada.

At the same time, at every step, we balanced quality, sustainability, function, and usability.

Let's break it down:

Problem: most of garlic used in Canada is from China which is then heavily sprayed and bleached before it reaches our kitchens.

Solution: we grow 100% natural Canadian garlic on our acreage in soil that has never been and never will be sprayed, with soil that has been minerally enriched by organic fertilizer from Gaia Green (amazing company that we are proud to work with), because we ship within Canada we are not required to spray or bleach our garlic.

Problem: Canadian garlic is only available for a short portion of the year... July to Christmas (if you are lucky)

Solution: we use the method of freeze drying our product to ensure that it is shelf stable and available for use year round. And the beauty of freeze drying is that it retains 97% of the original nutrients found in fresh garlic. For more info on why we freeze dry see our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Problem: I hate food prepping garlic. My hands end up stinky and it takes so much time!

Solution: our freeze dried garlic chunks are ready to use. If you are putting them into a recipe that has liquid in it like a sauce, soup or stew then simply add it in as is. If you are wanting to use it in something like a guacamole dip simply rehydrate the garlic in warm water and within 2-5 minutes you have fresh garlic that is already chopped and ready to use... without the mess, without the stinky hands.

I could continue, but I can promise you, we've thought about everything, again and again. You can ask us anything else here too.

Otherwise, go and get your hands on some of our amazing garlic before it is gone because we can't always keep up with the demand.

Much gratitude,

Rosemary & Christian
